HB-28 S305408-019 vs S305408-022: write the spool order without guesswork

Hobart HB-28 package comparison: S305408-019 is a 2-pound spool and S305408-022 is a 10-pound spool; both use 0.035-inch wire.

A request for 0.035-inch Hobart HB-28 still leaves a purchasing decision open. Which package does the buyer need to supply? An exact part number and an explicit count of spools make that request easier to quote, check and receive. This guide focuses on that handoff after the responsible person has selected the wire for the job.

Two part numbers, one clear distinction

Hobart lists S305408-019 as a 0.035-inch (0.9 mm), two-pound (0.9 kg) spool. S305408-022 is also 0.035-inch (0.9 mm), but its listed package is a ten-pound (4.5 kg) spool. These are two separate package entries for HB-28. The shared diameter does not make their ordering codes interchangeable.

Check the Hobart HB-28 package table against the supplier quotation. The manufacturer listing establishes the product-package description; it does not establish a distributor’s current stock, price, minimum order or carton quantity. Ask the seller to state its selling unit explicitly.

Keep spool count separate from package weight

Consider an illustrative request for three spools of S305408-019. The purchase line should say three spools, two pounds per spool, rather than simply “quantity three” or “six pounds of HB-28.” Those shorter descriptions leave room for the supplier to interpret quantity differently. This is an ordering example, not a recommendation for how much wire your job requires.

A practical purchase line is: “Hobart HB-28, manufacturer part S305408-019, 0.035-inch wire, two-pound spool; order quantity: three individual spools. Confirm the number of spools supplied and quote the total delivered price.” Add the supplier’s own stock code in a separate field so it does not replace the manufacturer identifier.

Ask for a written substitution description

If the requested package is unavailable, ask the seller to name the proposed part number and describe the changed package. Do not let an acknowledgment saying “equivalent HB-28” close the question. The person responsible for the equipment and purchase should be able to see exactly what is proposed before accepting it.

For example, replacing several smaller spools with one larger spool changes the package arrangement even if the total wire weight looks attractive. Obtain the feeder’s package requirements from its documentation and resolve the proposed change with the responsible reviewer. Neither of these two product-table rows alone proves compatibility with your machine.

Compare quotes using the same requested unit

Put the manufacturer part number, pounds per spool, number of spools and quoted total on the same comparison sheet. If one quotation uses cartons and another uses individual spools, ask how many spools each carton contains before comparing totals. Leave an unanswered field blank instead of assuming the selling unit from a photograph.

Separate item cost from freight and any other stated charges. A low displayed price is not a complete comparison when the offered quantities differ. Keep the quotation date and the supplier’s written availability statement with the request; this article makes no claim about current retailer stock or a lowest price.

Give receiving the same reference

Send the accepted purchase line to whoever receives the delivery. That person should have the expected manufacturer part number, diameter, package weight and spool count in one place. Compare the delivered labels with that record and flag a discrepancy before treating the shipment as the requested item.

If the supplier used a different stock code, retain the cross-reference provided in the quotation. A product-family photo or a familiar box design is less precise than the agreed identifiers. Keep a record of any accepted substitution so the next reorder does not quietly return to the superseded package.

Keep the ordering note focused

For the broader selection questions, use WSP’s existing ER70S-6 filler-metal guide and filler-metal finder. This package comparison supplies no welding settings or procedure approval. Its purpose is narrower: make the requested HB-28 package and quantity clear enough that the buyer, supplier and receiver are working from the same purchase line.
